Day in Review May 27, 2015
Today was the first day of my Divvy riding. I successfully, and enjoyably, rode from Union station a half mile west to my library. I don’t think it saved me any time, but I think it will save me some money and give me some exercise at the same time. I went to the gym and at least I feel like I’ve had a full workout.
I figure that if I use Divvy three times a week to work, that’s saved me minimum $24 per month. Four times is $32. At that price, if I bike for two months, I break even. I don’t mention riding back from work, because as of today, I wasn’t able to. There was a bike in the dock, but it was unavailable. The two nearest stations were empty. At that point I had to decide how far I wanted to go out of my way to get one. At some point the trade off becomes I miss my train. Tomorrow, I will have to check the hospital rack. Its the opposite direction, but still worth the time.
The rest of my day was getting ready for my teaching session. It was to the fourth year pharmacy students as they get ready for their clinical rotations. I was one of a series of lectures through the day, encapsulating what they were going to need starting tomorrow.
They were a good class generally. 162 students on site, and another 40 at a regional. I had a colleague at the regional helping. I discussed the website and the apps that we had, going over three of them. The apps were a challenge. I explained when content was different and when it was the same as web content. I also had to go over which app was used for what purpose. Presenting the apps was interesting. I had hoped there was a way to present directly from the tablet, but we couldn’t get it to work. I ended up using the doc cam and while not the greatest projection, it worked well enough for the day. There was a lot of material to cover and much of it was supposed to be review as they had a drug information course. But the access to the resources has changed since they took it and the guide has changed as well.
I had a brief review with the course coordinator, and she felt it went well. We have a meeting scheduled for a few weeks from now to see what we can improve for next year. I also talked with the instructor who works with the students next. I will send her an email about how we can assess what materials that the students are using for their clinicals. It would be a fairly easy paper for me and would give us some useful information regarding teaching and collections.
That was the bulk of my day. I checked in with email from time to time. As soon as I get in, I need to prep for a meeting I’m running to discuss our future plans for the seedling project. That’s another bit of work coming down the road. I need to get that into my planning calendar. I need to get to plan my planning calendar. But enought for today.
