The last paper
Last week was a challenging work week, which entirely coincided with the last week of grad school. I sweated this last one out. But I’ll talk about how I feel now that my grad school work is over at another time. For today, I did the thing I promised myself. I went to the public library and checked out a bunch of books and for the foreseeable future, I will be lost in print. Not that I didn’t do this at the end of every semester, mind you. It’s just that this time I really have the feeling of free time once again. That’s something I haven’t felt in over four years.
Here’s are the books I checked out today.
Mockingjay I wanted to read because everyone raved about the books a few years ago. I managed to catch the first two on semester breaks. I figured I might as well finish it off. The family will want to see all the movies and I’d rather read the books first.
I read a review on the Interestings and was intrigued. Straight fiction I get into sometimes, and this sounded like just enough normal for me to consider it. That and some characters are all about their artsy lives, which I’m way into about my own life, strikes a chord.
Kushiel’s Chosen is the second of Jacqueline Carey’s series. I started off with Naamah’s series and am now doubling back.
The Golem and the Jinni is one that I spotted from Scalzi’s Arc list. Combined with a telling of the Golem story from my storytelling class makes me want to read this.
Lastly, is The Midwife’s tale. I was looking for Ariana Franklin’s books, but they didn’t have one I hadn’t read. This one was billed as similar (right down to cover art), so I figured why not.
And that is my entertainment for now.
